Using Raspberry Seed Oil As A Sun Screen?
Whilst it isn’t possible to make any scientific claims about the SPF values of carrier oils, there is a long tradition of people using Raspberry Seed Oil to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
Many believe Cold Pressed Raspberry Seed Oil is the best carrier oil to use as a sun bathing oil, especially for fair skinned people.
Others swear by Organic Rosehip Seed Oil as an after sun balm, especially when blended with the essential oils known to be good for healing burns, like Organic Lavender Essential Oil and for reducing scars and wound healing like Organic Geranium Essential Oil. (Both of these essential oils are in the Sun Tanning Essential Oil Blend.)
Please note: Wild As The Wind stock several versions of each of these essential oils. To view them all, please use the search box at the top of the page using “Lavender” or “Geranium” as your search terms. Then click return. A list of all of the relevant oils will appear, including the individual oils and blended essential oil options.
I Use A Raspberry Seed Oil Blend In The Summer
I personally have a lot of sun exposure in the summer because of the nature of my work. But, I am half Scottish, and so I am very pale skinned. Nevertheless, I would never use a commercial sun tanning oil, or cream, due to the health risks they present.
Instead, I like to use Raspberry Seed Oil as a carrier oil for four very healing essential oils, which are excellent for skin health. I dilute these essential oils at a 2% dilution in the Raspberry Seed Oil, as I am always clothed when I am outside, so I don’t need comprehensive coverage. (If I were sunbathing on the beach, and therefore needing to cover myself from head to toe in my oil, I would use a 1% dilution.)
The essential oils I use are all very affordable:
- Organic Lavender Essential Oil
- Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil
- Organic Geranium Rose Essential Oil
- Organic Palmarosa Essential Oil
All four of these aromatherapy oils are now available as a Wild As The Wind Blend. They are appropriately called Wild As The Wind Sun Tanning Essential Oil Blend!
Why Use Raspberry Seed Oil In The Sun?
According to folklore, Cold Pressed Raspberry Seed Oil has an SPF of anywhere between 28 SPF and 50 SPF. Variations are likely to occur due to differing climatic conditions and soil fertility differences in the regions where the raspberries are grown. The more sun the better! France, Spain and Russia are big producers of Raspberries.
Raspberry Seed Oil can be blended with other oils to further vary the sun protection factor. When blended with Organic Pomegranate Seed Oil, which is reputed to have an unofficial SPF value of 8, and a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil, it makes for a very heavenly sun bathing oil.
It can also be added to Organic Wheatgerm Oil which is thought to have an SPF of 15. However, it does not work anywhere near as well as Raspberry Seed Oil. Organic Wheatgerm Oil is best kept for healing scars and stretch marks.
Organic Sweet Almond Oil is considered to have an SPF of 6.
The fairer your skin the more Raspberry Seed Oil you’ll want in your mix.
Why Choose A Natural Sunscreen?
Natural sunscreens are necessary for a whole host of reasons:
- Conventional sunscreens are anything but natural (please see the next paragraph).
- A natural sunscreen is likely to be more effective than most other sunscreens.
- You can tailor your natural sunscreen to suit you.
- Natural sunscreens are the healthy option for you, your family and the environment.
- The oils in a natural sunscreen are going to provide a lot more skincare benefits than just protecting you in the sun.
- You can use your natural sunscreen as a moisturiser in the winter, when the sun has long since made it’s way to the edge of the horizon. This means there’s no waste with a natural sunscreen.
The US based Environmental Working Group, (EWG), releases an annual guide detailing the safety and efficacy of sunscreen products sold in the US. This report is designed to highlight the potential harms commercial sunscreen present. The EWG is a non-profit, advocacy group founded in 1993, focused on environmental health and for positively changing industry standards.
Carla Burns, EWG’s senior director for cosmetic science, is on record for saying:
- Many sunscreens sold in the US are not guaranteed to be safe or effective.
- Out of the 1,850 products reviewed by the EWG, only c. 25% meet EWG standards for efficacy and ingredient safety.
- There’s a lack of federal regulation and evolution in the regulatory space.
Raspberry Seed Oil Is An Antioxidant Powerhouse
Raspberry Seed Oil is an incredible antioxidant oil containing a great amount of Vitamin E, making it an exceptional free radical scavenger. This is why it has been used traditionally to reduce skin irritation and rashes, including Eczema and Psoriasis.
Like Organic Sweet Almond Oil, it is also thought to be an excellent anti-inflammatory oil.

Raspberry Seed Oil For Collagen Production
Collagen is the connective tissue which keeps our skin looking young and healthy. The reduction of collagen due to poor diet and ageing is what gives rise to wrinkles.
There are several antioxidants in Raspberry Seed Oil which promote Collagen:
- Tocopherols (Vitamin E)
- Carotenoids (Vitamin A)
- Ellagic acid helps reduce the degeneration of collagen.
These antioxidants stimulate collagen production whilst also protecting collagen integrity. These multi-tasking potently healing constituents in Raspberry Seed Oil also stimulate cell repair and reduce the appearance of damaged skin.
Raspberry Seed Oil For Ageing Skin
Raspberry Seed Oil effectively moisturises mature skin thereby potentially improving skin elasticity, which is the secret to youthful looking skin. Improved elasticity reduces wrinkles. Plus, all of the nutrients in this nutrient packed oil also reduce the appearance of dry skin and can even help to regenerate skin cells.
