Description
Niaouli Essential Oil
Melaleuca Viridiflora is the botanical name of the tree from which Niaouli Essential Oil is derived from. More specifically, it is known as Melaleuca quinquenervia viridiflora. It is commonly known as the broad-leaved paperbark tree.
These trees are native to the Moluccas, aka the Maluku Islands which form an archipelago in the east of Indonesia. These days it can be found all over Indonesia, and in New Caledonia, Southern Papua New Guinea and Australia.
It has also found its way to Madagascar, which is where this Wild As The Wind Niaouli Essential Oil is from.
As with Tea Tree Essential Oil, to which it is related, it shares many of the benefits of this better known aromatherapy oil.
Like Tea Tree Essential Oil, it is disinfectant and antiseptic, and can be used to take the burn out of insect bites.
Both aromatherapy oils are also very affordable, and are used interchangeably in a lot of medicinal skincare and personal care products. They are particularly prevalent in chest and muscle rubs, as well as antibacterial face washes etc.
Niaouli Essential Oil is also closely related to Cajeput Essential Oil, which is deemed to be the better smelling oil out of the three. (Cajeput Essential Oil is sometimes spelt Cajuput Essential Oil.)
Ultimately, all three aromatherapy oils mentioned are in the Myrtle family, Myrtaceae, and tend to thrive in woodlands, swamps and streams.
There are six distinct chemotypes of Niaouli Essential Oil due to the different growing conditions in the regions where these trees grow.
The chemotype (or chemical prominence) list includes:
- 1,8-cineole
- (E)-nerolidol (Nerolina)
- methyleugenol
- methylisoeugenol
- linalool
- viridiflorol
As this Wild As The Wind Niaouli Essential Oil is sourced from Madagascar it is of the 1,8-cineole chemotype, which is predominant in this region.
