Description

Laundry Essential Oil Blend [Organic]

This Organic Laundry Essential Oil Blend has been developed for use with non-bio laundry detergents.

As awareness increases around the negative effects of conventionally produced fragranced laundry detergent, there is a growing need for natural alternatives.

Wild As The Wind Organic Laundry Essential Oil Blend is an ideal alternative, as it adds a delightful, but subtle scent to your wash, whilst also helping to eliminate contagions, such as microbial and viral residues.

Conventional fragranced washing fluids and washing powders are increasingly understood to be undermining our health in a number of significant ways. Most notably:

  • Endocrine disruption (causing hormone imbalance)
  • Skin irritation – rashes, eczema, contact dermatitis etc
  • Asthma
  • Migraines
  • Toxicity

*Please see the Wild As The Wind Cleaning Essential Oil Blend for a natural way of avoiding unnatural fragrances, and other endocrine disrupting chemicals, within conventional cleaning products.

Wild As The Wind Organic Laundry Essential Oil Blend

Wild As The Wind Organic Laundry Essential Oil Blend contains Organic Geranium Rose Essential Oil & Organic Lavender Essential Oil. These two aromatherapy oils not only smell amazing, but they also exert a good number of positive impacts on your wash.

The Organic Geranium Rose Essential Oil & Organic Lavender Essential Oil effectively exert the opposite effects of conventionally produced laundry products.

Instead of irritating our eyes, skin and internal organs, they calm them down. Rather than causing endocrine / hormone disruption, they help to restore endocrine function. They also help ease breathing difficulty and help to reduce toxic burdens within our bodies.

The full list of benefits of Organic Geranium Rose Essential Oil & Organic Lavender Essential Oil can be found after the information about conventionally produced fragranced laundry products.

It is better to detail the health benefits of Organic Geranium Rose Essential Oil & Organic Lavender Essential Oil once the full extent of the harmful effects of conventionally produced fragranced laundry products have been fully explored…

Conventionally Fragranced Laundry Products

Conventionally produced fragranced laundry products contain a slew of problematic ingredients, which are harming us, our children, our pets and the environment. Plus, whilst they remove dirt and grease, unless they contain bleach, they are doing nothing to reduce harmful bacterial and viral residues.

The two organic essential oils in the Wild As The Wind Organic Laundry Essential Oil Blend are both antibacterial and antiviral.

At the end of this article I explain why most of the ingredients in conventionally produced fragranced laundry products are harmful, some very seriously, but in this section I want to draw attention to the specific harms of synthesised chemical fragrances, and adulterated essential oils.

Synthesised Chemical Fragrances In Washing Fluids & Powders

Ubiquitously used synthesised chemical fragrances in laundry detergents are a big problem. This is largely due to the toxicity of these ingredients. However, not only do our bodies fail to recognise and assimilate these ‘alien’ ingredients, they also affect us at a profound, systemic level.

Anything that is endocrine disrupting means that fundamental functions within our body start to malfunction. The endocrine system regulates our hormones… or, at least, given half a chance that’s what it does!

Hormones are simply chemical messengers, produced by our bodies to help maintain homeostasis… or, normal natural health. Anything that disrupts our hormones, therefore, disrupts the way in which our body is regulated. This disruption quickly leads to:

  • Skin issues
  • Emotional issues
  • Digestive issues
  • Immune issues
  • Contributes to the development of autoimmune conditions
  • Contributes to the development of inflammatory pain

Adulterated Essential Oils

Fragrances are not only entirely synthesised in labs… they can also start out as naturally obtained fragrances, such as essential oils.

However, these natural essential oils do not have the ability to maintain their fragrance for as long as industrial and commercial processes require. The products, in which adulterated essential oils are used, are required to be stored for long periods and sit within distribution networks, or on supermarket shelves, for a long time.

Plus, manufacturers use fragrances as a selling point. This is a great motivator for the buying public because our sense of smell is very emotive and evocative.

Manufacturers capitalise on this as they understand that fragrance appeals to our emotional sensibilities.

If a fragrance is appealing enough it can almost become addictive!

So, increasing the longevity of artificial fragrances within laundry products has been used as a very effective selling point.

‘Staying fresh’ in the closet means that natural essential oils need to be heavily adulterated through artificial chemical processes. They are, very sadly, rendered toxic, despite their beautiful, natural origins.

Reducing The Need For Forever Fragrances

The chemical synthesis of forever fragrances is only necessary because manufacturers would have a much tougher time selling bland domestic products to us without them.

Fragrance adds the romance and allure to otherwise very functional products used for household chores.

Chemical processes are helping manufacturers save money whilst vastly enhancing the appeal of their products. But, these cost saving exercises transfer the very real costs to our health and our environments on to us.

Thankfully, as consumers, the power to change things rests with us. All we need to do is wise up!

Studies show that women choose products based almost solely on fragrance, even when the product is clearly demonstrated to be ineffective at cleaning.

We can start buying these products in their bland, unscented form, thereby eliminating the need for fragrances to last such a long time. Instead, we can add our preferred scent to our laundry at the point of use. And, we can ensure that the scented ingredients we add are 100% natural, and safe for us to use. And, by this, I of course mean… 100% natural essential oils.

This would then force manufacturers to start rethinking their marketing objectives. If we could shift the emphasis from artificial fragrance to product safety, then this would really be a win / win situation for us.

If the only selling points left to manufacturers were product safety and environmental impact, then this would force them to considerably ‘up their game’ in a really life affirming way!

Please read to the end of this article to see just how much harm our fragranced laundry detergents are doing to us and our planet.

Conventionally Fragranced Laundry Products

The ingredients which do most harm in conventionally produced fragranced laundry products are as follows:

SLS & SLES :: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate [aka Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate]

This is the most common chemical found in laundry detergents. It is also found in all conventionally produced foaming personal care products, (soap and shampoo etc), washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc. SLS & SLES are surfactants which were originally developed as garage floor degreasers.

SLS & SLES ill-effects include:

  • Skin inflammation
  • Eye irritation
  • Lung irritation
  • Internal organ damage
  • Environmental damage

Because SLS & SLES are understood to be effective irritants, they are often used in scientific researcher to induce acute skin and eye irritation.

Phosphates

Phosphate exposure has  been linked to:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Death from all causes in a general, healthy population.
  • Eutrophication – the mineral poisoning of waterways which causes high die-off of native marine animal species. Phosphates cause algae explosions which suffocate water systems.
  • Formaldehyde – the inhalation of formaldehyde increases the risk of cancer [CDC – Centre For Disease Control in the USA].
  • Necrosis – causes spots of dying tissue.
  • Promotes an immune response consistent with parasitic infection.
  • Prompts allergic reactions.
  • B1 probable carcinogen – according to the EPA, (the Environmental Protection Agency in the USA), phosphate is likely a cancer-causing substance & asserts that it causes acute toxicity when in contact with skin.
Chlorine Bleach – a skin & lung irritant, with comprehensive detrimental effects for our microbiome & skin biome. Excessive exposure can cause severe caustic burns to skin & eyes, blindness & pulmonary oedema, (fluid on the lungs that can result in respiratory failure).

Ammonium Sulfate

Ammonium sulphate is a category 3 oral, skin, and respiratory toxin.

Dioxane :: 1,4 Dioxane / Diethylene Dioxide / Diethylene Ether / Dioxan

A combustible & carcinogenic ingredient, which has been known to cause cancer since 1988.

Known effects include:

  • Irreversible skin, eye, and lung inflammation
  • Kidney, central nervous system, (CNS), liver & respiratory system damage

Optical Brighteners / UV Brighteners

Optical brighteners don’t remove stains. They coat clothing with a substance that reflects visible light, so it makes the stains invisible.

They are:

  • Eye, skin, & lung irritants
  • Extremely toxic to aquatic life
  • May spontaneously combust in the presence of static electricity
  • Clothes dryers create static

Ammonium Quaternary Sanitizers :: Quats / Synthesized Cationic Surfactants

A corrosive ingredient, which again causes eye, skin, & lung damage.

Nonylphenol Ethoxylates / Nonoxynol, NPEs

Manufacturer warnings include:

  • Harm to eyes, skin, & lungs
  • Prolonged exposure to inhaled fumes or mist may be fatal

Fragrance / Parfum

Manufacturers are not required to list the ingredients of their fragrances because of a legal loophole.

Dyes

Dyes also contribute to unexplained allergies and rashes. Many are proven carcinogens & almost all are endocrine disruptors.

Benzyl Acetate

This is harmful to our kidneys and nervous system.

Dichlorobenzene :: P-Dichlorobenzene/ Benzene

Benzene has an immediate, highly toxic, effect on aquatic life that can continue poisoning our waterways for years. The fumes cause optical damage, and it is listed as a carcinogen for humans.

I changed my usual washing liquids to kit & Kin fragrance free laundry liquid , but I just wasn’t sure if I liked no fragrance to my washing, so I discovered Rachel’s laundry blend , I started off with 5 drops but it wasn’t quite enough, so I now add about 8 to 10 drops on larger loads , my washing comes out with just a hint of a lovely smell of the blended oils .
Thank you Rachel, just about to order some more along with your lovely face oils 🥰

    • Rachel Wild

Hi Anne, thanks so much for your feedback. x x x I actually add about twenty drops, but I have a 10Kg washing machine… the smaller amounts are for the 6Kg machines. We all find our perfect level. x x x (Our washing machines would say, “the more drops the merrier” as the essential oils in higher concentrations increasingly improve the condition of all the tubes and inner workings, killing mould and bacteria, so making our appliances last longer and keeping our laundry safer!) x x x

I’ve just re-ordered this absolute keeper of a laundry cupboard must-have. I use this to give a most natural and non-synthetic scent to my laundry. I have found a happy balance of a simple non-biological washing flakes, a cup of vinegar and 10 drops of this oil. Now we have the perfect blend for both clean washing and a sparkling scale-free washing machine. I highly recommend this add-in to your laundry staples!!

    • Rachel Wild

Hi Sarah, thanks so much for your excellent feedback. I love that you have shared what you use to do your washing. x x x Here’s another tip for you: Adding a level TBS of soda crystals will allow you to reduce your use of laundry flakes, considerably. Plus, adding the vinegar towards the end of the cycle acts as a fabric softener. Vinegar, is in fact, a brilliant hair conditioner as it has the ability to soften and detangle… but, whilst distilled white vinegar is what you would use in your wash… you wouldn’t use this on your hair! Cider vinegar, with the mother still in it, is the best choice for hair care. x x x x x (I love to add Lavender, Rosemary and Geranium essential oils to the cider vinegar I intend to use on my hair.) x x x x x
