Sage Essential Oil

This Sage Essential Oil is an ethically sourced aromatherapy oil from Croatia.

It is also known as Dalmatian Sage Essential Oil or Common Sage Essential Oil.

Wild As The Wind also stock another Ethically Sourced Sage Essential Oil, obtained from Spain.

The Ethically Sourced Spanish Sage Essential Oil is considered superior. Nevertheless, this Croatian version of Sage Essential Oil is also potent, and deeply beneficial.

As with the Spanish Sage Essential Oil, this Croatian Sage Essential Oil is a close cousin to Clary Sage Essential Oil.

Both Spanish and Croatian Sage Essential Oils are derived from plants within the same plant family, Lamiaceae, which is also known as Labiatea, but the variety of Sage plant used is different to make these oils. In addition, the growing conditions of the plants used to make these two different Sage Essential Oils, obviously also differ.

Nevertheless, the benefits of these two varieties of Sage Essential Oil are very similar.

Sage Essential Oil Background

The botanical name of the Sage plant used to make this aromatherapy oil is Salvia officinalis, a medicinal and culinary plant that has been employed, since ancient times, to treat many common conditions. There are many mentions of its use is Egypt, Greek, Roman and Anglo Saxon texts.

Salvia officinalis directly translates from Latin to the following:

  • Salvia  = to cure
  • Officinalis = medicinal

The Romans considered Salvia officinalis a sacred healing plant.

The botanical name of the Sage plant used to make Spanish Sage Essential Oil is Salvia lavandulifolia.

The reason why these two aromatherapy oils have so much in common is because Salvia lavandulifolia is a subspecies of S. officinalis (subsp. lavandulifolia).

Sage Essential Oil Overview

Modern medicine also highly esteems this medicinal plant and the essential oil obtained from it.

Sage Essential Oil has shown antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus mutans and Shigella sonnei, highlighting good efficacy against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.1

Sage Essential Oil is, therefore, capable of dealing with a number of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. However, the benefits of Sage Essential oil are certainly not limited to this.

The most important components of S. officinalis, which is commonly grown in many Mediterranean countries, are phenolic components. Sage has antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, and immunosuppressive effects, so its medical and aromatic usage is important.2

Sage Essential oil is one of the most thoroughly studied aromatherapy oils with a view to establishing its medicinal applications.

In recent years, this plant has been a subject of intensive studies to document its traditional use and to find new biological effects. These studies have revealed a wide range of pharmacological activities for S. officinalis. Present review highlights the up-to-date information on the pharmacological findings that have been frequently reported for S. officinalis. These findings include anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antimutagenic, antidementia, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic effects.3

Although Sage Essential Oil is not an ingredient commonly found in toothpaste, its benefits to oral health are clear:

Today, the European Medicines Agency has proposed S. officinalis EO for oral use due to its anticancer and anti-inflammatory capabilities and for the treatment of several diseases such as dyspepsia, pharyngitis, stomatitis and inflammation in the mouth or throat. In a study performed by Russo et al., the anticancer activity was demonstrated to be correlated to the presence of α- and β-thujone isomers and other compounds (such as camphor), acting together in a synergistic action; these components are able to reduce side effects affecting cancer patients by inducing apoptotic cancer cell death.1

Cautions & Contraindications

In terms of aromatherapy, Sage encompasses Salvia officinalis (Common Sage), Salvia lavandulifolia (Spanish Sage) and Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage).

Clary Sage Essential Oil is the more commonly used aromatherapy oil, partly because of its comprehensive benefits for female health, but also because Common Sage Essential Oil and Spanish Sage Essential Oil contain ketones, which means that they should be used with care.

Sage Essential Oil should always be used sparingly in acute circumstances. Chronic use is not advised.

May cause skin irritation – all essential oils should be properly diluted in a suitable carrier oil prior to topical application.

Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young recommend a dermal maximum of 12.5% in their book: Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals
