Description
Spanish Sage Essential Oil
Sage Essential Oil is diversely beneficial, with many potential applications.
This Spanish Sage Essential Oil is a superior aromatherapy oil, with a very full aroma. It is a close cousin to Clary Sage Essential Oil.
Spanish Sage Essential Oil is also known as Lavender Sage Essential Oil or Lavender-Leaved Sage Essential Oil.
The botanical name of the Sage plant used to make this aromatherapy oil is Salvia lavandulifolia.
Wild As The Wind also stock another Ethically Sourced Sage Essential Oil, which is Croatian in origin, and is obtained from the Salvia officinalis variety of Sage plant.
Both varieties of Sage are similar, offering many of the same benefits.
The reason why Spanish Sage Essential Oil and the Croatian Sage Essential Oil are so similar is because Salvia lavandulifolia is a subspecies of Salvia officinalis (subsp. lavandulifolia).
Most of the scientific research into Sage Essential Oil has been focused on oils procured from the Salvia officinalis variety. For this reason, it is advisable to read the product description of the Croatian Sage Essential Oil for a more comprehensive overview of the benefits of using either Sage Essential Oil.
Spanish Sage Essential Oil
There is very little research available for Salvia lavandulifolia Essential Oil, and the research that can be found tends to mention Salvia officinalis, noting the same benefits.
For example, rosmarinic acid, a phenolic compound and ester of caffeic acid, which naturally occurs in several plants of the Lamiaceae family, is also present in Salvia lavandulifolia and Salvia officinalis. However, Rosmarinic acid earned its name from Rosmarinus officinalis, (Rosemary), as this is the plant from which it was originally isolated.
… significant sources of rosmarinic acid include Salvia officinalis (sage), Ocimum tenuiflorum (basil), Origanum majorana (marjorum), Melissa officinalis (lemon balm) and Salvia lavandulifolia (Spanish sage). The compound has been documented for numerous medicinal activities viz. antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antidepressant, anticarcinogenic, and chemo-preventive properties.1
This list of impressive benefits pales compared to the documented benefits on the Croatian Sage Essential Oil page. It is strongly advised that you visit this page to obtain a much more comprehensive appreciation of the benefits of both oils.

Cautions & Contraindications
In terms of aromatherapy, Sage encompasses Salvia officinalis (Common Sage), Salvia lavandulifolia (Spanish Sage) and Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage).
Clary Sage Essential Oil is the more commonly used aromatherapy oil, partly because of its comprehensive benefits for female health, but also because Common Sage Essential Oil and Spanish Sage Essential Oil contain ketones, which means that they should be used with care.
Sage Essential Oil should always be used sparingly in acute circumstances. Chronic use is not advised.
May cause skin irritation – all essential oils should be properly diluted in a suitable carrier oil prior to topical application.
