Description
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is predominantly made of citral, an aldehyde which dominates the composition of this beautifully aromatic oil. Containing in excess of 96% cital, Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil understandably possesses a strong lemon scent.
Citral is commonly found in aromatherapy oils like Lemongrass Essential Oil, Citronella Essential Oil and Lemon Essential Oil, which is expressed from lemon peel. However, Lemon Essential Oil cannot compete with the intense lemon-scent of Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil, making it one of the best essential oils to mask unpleasant odours. It is routinely used by chefs to combat the smell of cooking fish, for example.
Citral is a combination of two isomers, geranial (trans-citral) and neral (cis-citral), which lend this oil its potently alluring scent, and are responsible for its popularity, as a flavouring within the food industry, and a cherished aromatic within the fragrance industry.
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil has many similarities with Myrtle Essential Oil, despite its distinctly different aroma.
It provides many of the same benefits, as it shares a very similar energetic imprint. So, for those seeking the type of support offered by Myrtle Essential Oil, who do not appreciate it aromatically, Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil provides an excellent aromatic alternative.
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is derived from the Backhousia citriodora tree, which is a flowering evergreen tree / shrub, native to the subtropical rainforests of Australia.
The Lemon Myrtle tree is cultivated for its leaves, which are used for several applications, including culinary, medicinal, herbal teas and for the production of essential oil. The terminal branches of the tree, alongside the leaves, are also used in the production of essential oil.
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is also known as Lemon-Scented Myrtle Oil or Lemon-Scented Ironwood Oil. It is also referred to as Sweet Verbena Myrtle Oil and simply Lemon Ironwood Oil.
It possesses two chemotypes.

Lemon myrtle oil was shown to possess significant antimicrobial activity against the organisms Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), Aspergillus niger, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Propionibacterium acnes comparable to its major component—citral. For example, Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (%v/v) against Aspergillus niger have been recorded as 0.1, i.e., lower than tea tree oil (0.4) and equivalent to citral (0.1) [49]. The antimicrobial activity of B. citriodora essential oils was found to be greater than that of citral alone and often superior to Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil. B. citriodora has significant antimicrobial activity that has potential as an antiseptic or surface disinfectant or for inclusion in foods as a natural antimicrobial agent.
