Description

Birch (Sweet) Essential Oil

Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil is an unctuous and pungent essential oil. It possesses a dark colour when it is unrefined. This Wild As The Wind Sweet Birch Essential Oil is very dark, and is, of course, unrefined. This makes it optimally beneficial.

Sweet Birch Essential Oil boasts an exceptionally impressive array of benefits. Please go to the Sweet Birch Essential Oil Health Benefits section, below, for more information.

However, Sweet Birch Essential Oil contains very high levels of the analgesic found in Willow Bark / Aspirin, and so it comes with a full list of contraindications. These must be read before use. (Please also see below.)

Due to the toxicological issues relating to the potential misuse of Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil, Wild As The Wind only supplies small bottles of this essential oil.

Birch (Sweet) Essential Oil Aroma

Even the smell of the birch essential oil is unique because it does not have the same musky and woody smell of most other essential oils derived from trees. In fact, it smells very minty, much like Wintergreen Essential Oil.

Sweet Birch Essential Oil has a syrupy but slightly sharp aroma. It is sweet, but pervasive, and although it’s not as camphorous, it is somewhat reminiscent of Fishermen’s Friends lozenges. It is also like a sweet smelling Cold Tar soap.

Sweet Birch Essential Oil is rarely bought for its aromatic qualities, but because it has myriad therapeutic benefits, it still remains quite a popular aromatherapy oil.

Sweet Birch Essential Oil Health Benefits

Sweet Birch Essential Oil is considered to be uplifting and stimulating, but at the same time, comforting and relaxing. It is also considered to be purifying.

Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil contains a phytochemical called methyl salicylate which has a well established reputation as a potent pain-reliever

Sweet Birch Essential Oil is derived from two types of birch tree. The first is the White Birch or Silver Birch, scientifically known as Betula Pendula. The second type of birch tree is the Black Birch, scientifically known as Betula Lenta.

This Birch Essential Oil is distilled from the Betula alba pendula tree, which is also known as:

  • Common Silver Birch
  • Lady of the Woods
  • Silver birch
  • Warty birch
  • European white birch
  • East Asian white birch
  • Downy birch
  • Moor birch

  • Fungal / yeast infections, including Ringworm
  • Pain relief
  • Fatigue
  • Oil pulling / dental health
  • Liver detoxification
  • Prevents the formation of kidney stones
  • Peripheral nerve tonic
  • Gout
  • Arthritis
  • Fever

Birch Essential Oil stimulates and maintains optimal blood circulation, making it very helpful for preventing joint and muscle pain.

With excellent analgesic and cortisone-like qualities, Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil also provides relief for muscle and joint pain – making it a firm favourite for those with arthritis, rheumatism, peripheral nerve damage and sports injuries.

Birch Essential Oil is an extremely potent antioxidant capable of detoxifying excess fats, uric acid, urea, bioaccumulated salts, as well as helping the body to eliminate excess water through increased urination and perspiration (diuretic + diaphoretic).  Because of these qualities it is excellent for reducing fever, thereby bringing about a faster recovery time.

Sweet Birch Essential Oil For Hair Care

Sweet Birch Essential Oil strengthens hair and facilitates the growth of healthier hair. It also prevents hair from getting too dry or brittle and acts as a great preventative for dandruff.

When combined with Rosemary Essential Oil and Lavender Essential Oil in a base of Pumpkin Seed Oil, it makes for the most excellent hair oil, which will out-perform any of the commercially available alternatives.

Birch Essential Oil Contraindications

Not to be used by children under the age of 16 years of age.

***Exposure to methyl salicylate can cause Reye’s Disease in children.

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

*** Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil (Betula lenta L.) whilst aromatically very different, is very similar to Wintergreen Essential Oil (Gaultheria fragrantissima and Gaultheria procumbens L.) Both contain high levels of methyl salicylate.

  • Wintergreen Essential Oil contains 98% methyl salicylate
  • Sweet Birch Essential Oil contains 90% methyl salicylate

Methyl salicylate bio-accumulates in the body and can cause toxicity. Thus, Sweet Birch Essential Oil must be used sparingly (must not exceed a 1% dilution), and must only be used acutely, rather than for periods in excess of a couple of weeks.

***6ml of Sweet Birch Essential Oil is approximately equivalent to c. 90 baby aspirins which means both Wintergreen Essential Oil and Sweet Birch Aromatherapy Oil MUST be stored out of the reach of children.

*Must be avoided by those with aspirin allergies, blood clotting disorders and those taking anticoagulant drugs.

Caution is advised for those with asthma, epilepsy or a history of seizures.

A skin test must be performed by those with sensitive skin and connective tissue disorders.

The elderly and those with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or Purpura, (caused by small blood vessels bursting, leaving small amounts of blood to permanently pool under the skin) should proceed with extreme caution or avoid these aromatherapy oils completely.

Since methyl salicylate impacts blood clotting, it should be avoided after surgery.
