Wildcrafted Organic Wormwood Essential Oil Science
In 2014 the National Library Of Medicine published Essential Oil of Artemisia annua L.: An Extraordinary Component with Numerous Antimicrobial Properties revealing that:
Artemisia annua L. (Asteraceae) is the source of the unique sesquiterpene endoperoxide lactone artemisinin, and used in the treatment of the chloroquine-resistant and cerebral malaria. The essential oil is rich in mono- and sesquiterpenes and represents a by-product with medicinal properties… the oil has been subjected to numerous studies supporting exciting antibacterial and antifungal activities. Both gram-positive bacteria (Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, and Listeria spp.), and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Haemophilus, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas spp.) and other microorganisms (Candida, Saccharomyces, and Aspergillus spp.) have been investigated… Artemisia essential oil has revealed strong antimicrobial properties towards numerous bacterial strains, both gram-positive and gram-negative, and diverse fungal strains, including many pathogens.
Artemisia annua has become particularly important in recent times, with scientists the world over, investigating and confirming its efficacy in the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‑CoV‑2) aka Covid-19, Covid and coronavirus etc…
In April 2020, China added three Traditional Chinese Medicinal formulas to its standard of care for COVID-19, including one containing Sweet Wormwood. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, aka TCM, Sweet Wormwood is known as Jinhua Qinggan, and is often administered in herbal form.
Artemisia annua L. is native to China.
In July 2021 the National Library of Medicine in the US published an overview of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 properties of Artemisia annua, its antiviral action, protein-associated mechanisms, and repurposing for COVID-19 treatment… the following is an except from this scientific paper.
Artemisia annua and its phytocompounds have a rich history in the research and treatment of malaria, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other diseases. Currently, the World Health Organization recommends artemisinin-based combination therapy as the first-line treatment for multi-drug-resistant malaria. Due to the various research articles on the use of antimalarial drugs to treat coronaviruses, a question is raised: do A. annua and its compounds provide anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) properties.
A number of studies have shown Sweet Wormwood to be an effective remedy in the treatment of COVID-19. Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as the first-line treatment for uncomplicated multi-drug-resistant malaria. Chloroquine (CQ) and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) are antimalarial drugs that have also been researched and used for autoimmune conditions such as RA [rheumatoid arthritis] and SLE [systemic lupus erythematosus]. Research on the antiviral activity of CQ started in the late 1960s. After the 2002 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-1 (SARS-CoV-1) and the 2012 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) outbreaks, the research on antimalarials for coronaviruses intensified. CQ and HCQ were studied for use against SARS-CoV-1, MERS-CoV, and other viruses through in vitro and clinical trials. The investigations pointed to the beneficial antiviral properties of CQ and HCQ against a variety of viruses, such as human coronavirus, enterovirus EV-A71, Zica virus, influenza virus A H5N1, chikungunya virus, dengue virus, and modestly for hepatitis C virus (HCV). These studies paved the way for similar work in the suitability of CQ and HCQ for treating SARS-CoV-2. In different studies, A. annua and its compounds exhibited antiviral, anti-cancer, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities. The essential oils of A. annua have shown activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as antifungal actions. Different essential oils and their components have also demonstrated antiviral activity against RNA and DNA viruses, including herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), dengue virus, influenza viruses (H1N1 and H5N1), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), coxsackieviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, Zica virus and adenovirus. Importantly, several reviews have identified the role of artemisinin and artesunate in the inhibition of hepatitis B virus (HBV), HCV, bovine viral diarrhea, human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), and members of the Herpesviridae family…
The following studies also indicate that Sweet Wormwood / Artemisia annua / Jinhua Qinggan is effective in the following ways:
- In February 2022, researchers in Saudi Arabia published a paper outlining the specific action of Artemisia annua in inhibiting and undermining the coronavirus. It revealed that Artemisia annua, and more specifically one of its main constituents, artemisinin, (and derivatives of the same), actively inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection by binding to a particular enzyme within our bodies, which the virus uses to perform viral replication, (in which it multiplies within our cells), and ultimately undermines our immune systems.
- A Pakistani trial found that Sweet Wormwood was 82.6% effective when used as a treatment for those who had tested positive for COVID. Treatment was administered at home in instances of mild to moderate infection.
- One COVID study revealed Jinhua Qinggan granules were effective in significantly alleviating fever, cough, fatigue, sputum, anxiety and the need for hospitalisation.
In July 2021 the following article was published: Study proves effectiveness of Artemisia annua against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro.
A multinational research group has been the first to show the excellent activity of artemisinin-based treatment against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human cell lines – including a specific type of lung cells.
This study was led by Dr. Yuyong Zhou from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, & Dr. Kerry Gilmore from the Max Planck Institute for Colloids & Interfaces in Germany.
*Artemisia annua is thus, considered broadly anitviral.
In October 2008 the National Library Of Medicine published: Artemisinins: their growing importance in medicine
Artemisinins are derived from extracts of sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) and are well established for the treatment of malaria, including highly drug-resistant strains. Their efficacy also extends to phylogenetically unrelated parasitic infections such as schistosomiasis. More recently, they have also shown potent and broad anticancer properties in cell lines and animal models. In this review, we discuss recent advances in defining the role of artemisinins in medicine, with particular focus on their controversial mechanisms of action. This safe and cheap drug class that saves lives at risk from malaria can also have important potential in oncology.

The Artemisia family is magical, mysterious and healing. It is an immense genus of hardy, half-hardy, annual, biennial, perennial or sub-shrub herbs. Many easily grow wild and some are cultivated for their ornamental presence. My thanks go to the wild ones who have survived the trials and tribulations of living on planet Earth. The wild flower signature is to remind us that we all have hidden skills and talents, to trust and open ourselves to the multitude of opportunities in life providing we rise above perceived limitations. We can find much inspiration from the Artemisias.

Hi Nicky, I love your comment. Thank you so much. x x x This product description is heavy on the science, so I’m so pleased that you have given it balance by adding the energetic qualities. Really appreciate it. x x x

This Organic Wormwood oil, has the most incredible aroma! Another special wildcrafted oil, full of a symphony of notes that sing to you; from woody base tones, herbaceous chords, to sweet scented highs and a plethora of notes in between.
This soft potent magic in a bottle will certainly be a useful (and sparingly used) remedy when required. It’s a great option for pain relief, anti-inflammatory issues, menstrual regulation, digestion aid and tonic for blood and circulation.
The price is very good in comparison to other companies, and I am sure the quality is unmatched considering it is organic and wildcrafted, which makes for a powerful tool to have on hand. Thank you! Jen xx

Hi Jen, I can tell you are really enjoying writing feedback for your essential oil! So poetic, and helpful! Thanks so, so much! Wormwood is also a potent anti-parasitic (allegedly 😉 ) as well as the other benefits you’ve listed, and so the temptation to over-use it is definitely there… but, as you so rightly say, it must be used sparingly because of the Thujone content. It was the Wormwood in absinthe that caused the Impressionist painters a few issues, and has been blamed for the the early demise of several creatives in the last century or two. Vincent Van Gogh and Oscar Wilde drank it. Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso also indulged. I don’t know about Dali, but I wouldn’t be surprised as it famously has psychoactive effects! Another great review Jen, thanks so much. Really helpful, and much appreciated. x x x
