Superfine Premium Red Clay

The mineral composition of red clay is very similar to that of green clay, with one key difference. Red clay has a higher iron oxide content, which allows it to exert additional benefits. It also has a slightly higher PH than green clay.

As with most clays, Montmorillonite red clay is very mineral dense, containing good levels of:

  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Manganese
  • Silica
  • Calcium
  • Sodium

The uniqueness of Montmorillonite red clay is in its structure. The surface of Montmorillonite clay is composed of very small, negatively-charged particles, which are excellent for positively-charged toxins and dirt within the skin.

Both the red and green clays, offered by Wild As The Wind, deliver many benefits, and can be used on both body and face.

Pure Red Clay

The use of red clay dates back to Roman and Egyptian times, and was most likely used by other great civilisations that preceded these times.

During these ancient civilisations, red clay was used by the elite classes to tone, cleanse, condition and enrich their skin and hair.

Montmorillonite red clay is soft to the touch, mineral rich, highly absorbent, deeply detoxifying and exfoliating, and delivers many discernable benefits to the skin and overall health.

Owing to its many benefits, red clay is still used in all manner of personal care and cosmetic products, to this day. Red clay spa treatments, often referencing Egyptian and Roman origins, are offered at some of the finest Health Spas in the UK.

Red Clay For Skincare

Montmorillonite red clay can detoxify impurities and improve the appearance of the skin. It also helps to detoxify impurities from the subcutaneous tissue.

Being mineral rich, it can also revitalise and replenish the skin, both bodily and facially.

As it helps to promote cell regeneration, it is also recommended as an exfoliator for the body and face.

It is suitable for all skin types, and is especially beneficial for those with sensitive, irritated, problem skin. Red clay is also beneficial for those with tired, mature, sagging skin.

One of the key benefits of red clay is that it relieves dermal congestion and improves blood flow. This not only leaves skin looking and feeling revived and refreshed, but also contributes to the overall health of the body.

Because red clay is so beneficial for circulation, it can help improve the appearance of couperose skin, caused by the dilation of small blood vessels, called capilliaries.

Red Clay Face Mask

Superfine Montmorillonite red clay can be used facially as well as for full body masks. It is superfine, and mixes easily into a smooth paste for easy application.

When used for face masks, Montmorillonite red clay helps to expand facial pores, facilitating improved elimination of impurities. It also draws on clogged debris within the skin and subcutaneous tissue, including environmental pollution, dead skin cells, trapped makeup and stored toxins which have been deposited in subcutaneous fat.

Red clay exerts a soothing, balancing, toning influence on the skin, leaving it looking revived, brighter, plumper and more youthful.

One of the perceived benefits of regular red clay masks is that it seems to temporarily diminish the appearance of large pores.

Another is the positive effect that red clay exerts on thread veins, and rosacea, a condition caused by weakened blood vessels in the face. Rosacea is exacerbated by exposure to heat, cold, emotional stress, and stimulants, such as alcohol, coffee and chocolate. When exposed to these stimuli, the blood vessels in our skin dilate.

Red clay is also very beneficial for other skin issues.

Red Clay For Problem Skin

Because red clay is a powerful antiseptic it cleanses the skin very deeply. This coupled with the fact that it exerts anti-inflammatory benefits, whilst also dilating the pores during use, red clay face masks are an ideal treatment for those who are prone to breakouts.

Red clay can really reduce the severity of acne, both in appearance and sensation. And, the same is true of other inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema.

Red clay is known to help regulate excess fat, eliminate bacteria, tonify the skin, and reduce inflammation. And, because it cleanses the skin so effectively, it helps to eliminate blackheads.

As an effective astringent, it reduces oiliness and improves skin tone.

Red Clay For Haircare

Once made into a smooth paste, Montmorillonite red clay, like Rhassoul clay, can be used instead of shampoo.

Many conventional shampoos contain toxic ingredients, and offer little in terms of nutrition.  Red clay, is purely natural, and contains no nasty ingredients. Instead, it delivers nutrients to the hair and scalp, improving the condition of both.

If you follow with a cider vinegar rinse, this will further enhance the condition of your hair, making it easier to comb, and improving texture and glossiness.

For full usage instructions, please read till the end.

In addition to effectively cleansing your hair, red clay will also:

  • Reduce oiliness, thereby reducing the frequency of hair washing
  • Reduce dryness
  • Eliminate impurities
  • Renourish the hair
  • Restore body & shine
  • Improve silkiness
  • Leave no residues, unlike many conventional shampoos
  • Help remove build-ups from conventional shampoos
  • Reduce frizz
  • Reduce dandruff

Red clay is an ideal hair product for red, brown, and dark hair due to the iron oxide in its composition that helps make these hair colours even more beautiful and intense.

Ingredient: 100% Red Montmorillonite

How to Use Red Clay

There are several ways of using Montmorillonite red clay. It is most commonly used as a rejuvenating, replenishing face mask, but full-body application is becoming more popular.

Whichever way you wish to use your clay, one important thing to remember always stays the same: Use a non-metallic implement to scoop your red clay, and for mixing.

Using a wooden spoon will preserve the electrical charge within the clay. This is very important for the efficacy of the clay.

Face Mask

To make your red clay paste, for application as a face mask, simply place the desired amount of clay in a bowl and add water until it forms a silky paste.

Remember to use a wooden spoon to scoop your red clay, and for mixing, to preserve the all-important electrical charge of the clay.

Once your paste is creamy and smooth, this can be applied to your clean, makeup free face, with a brush or the tips of your fingers.

Avoid application to the following areas of the face:

  • Eye sockets
  • Mouth

Allow the clay to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, or so, and then rinse off with warm water.

Do not use your muslin cloth for rinsing, as it will stain.

You can use Hydrosol Toners for mixing your red clay paste, for even better results, as well as a more indulgent experience.

When starting to implement face masks into your beauty regime, you can do so in a flurry! You may wish to do a face mask a day in the first week to rectify imperfections and reduce breakouts, discolouration and rashes.

However, once skin balance has been improved, reduce your face masks to once, or twice a week.

Everyone is different, so pay attention to your skin, and allow it to tell you the frequency needed for your red clay face masks.

Facial Exfoliation

Red clay can be combined with other ingredients to perform exfoliation. A good option for this uses the following ratios of ingredients:

1 x tbsp red clay + 1 x tbsp finely ground oatmeal + sufficient cider vinegar to form a paste.

This natural homemade red clay exfoliating paste can be used once weekly.

Simply apply the paste to your face, as you would the red clay face mask, and massage gently for up to two minutes.

Then leave the paste for another 5 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Remember to use a wooden spoon to scoop your red clay, and for mixing, to preserve the all-important electrical charge of the clay.

Hair Mask

To make a red clay hair mask, simply add more water than you would for a face mask. Your red clay hair mask needs to be a lot more runny, almost like the ‘slip’ used by ceramicists. The ratios are as follows:

1 x tbsp red clay to 1/4 cup of water.

Again, as with the face mask option, you can use Hydrosol Toners for mixing your red clay paste, or you can add a drop of your favourite essential oil blend to your ‘slip’.

The best essential oils for hair and scalp care are:

These essential oils are also available as organic aromatherapy oils. Please use the search box at the top of the page to locate them.

Also, please remember to use a wooden spoon to scoop your red clay, and for mixing, to preserve the all-important electrical charge of the clay.

Application is simple. Using your fingertips, massage the ‘slip’ into your scalp.

Leave for up to ten minutes for a deep cleanse. But, if you are short on time, two minutes will be sufficient for most people.

Do not let the clay dry in your hair, as this can contribute to hair damage. The clay shrinks when it dries, and so may cause hair breakage.

Whole Body Mask

The consistency of the paste you make for a whole body mask will be slightly more runny than the red clay paste used for facial application.

Again, please remember to use a wooden spoon to scoop your red clay, and for mixing, to preserve the all-important electrical charge of the clay.

Apply your red clay body mask before bathing, leaving it to dry whilst you attend to other personal care means.

Do not run a bath whilst waiting for the clay to dry. The steam from a drawn bath will keep the clay moist. The detoxification of the skin occurs close to the end of the clay drying phase, so letting it dry is an important step.

Simply rinse off in the shower after use. Then moisturise afterwards with a good bath & body oil.
