Perhaps owing to the naturally intoxicating aroma of its flowers, the Tilia tree possesses a rich history, and has been considered a sacred tree by many, as revealed by the folkloric traditions of many peoples. This is especially true of Ancient Greece and Egypt.

Masks made of linden wood have been found in the sarcophagi of the Fayum.

In ancient times, the Linden tree was dedicated to Venus, the Roman goddess of love, beauty and fertility.

Depicted as a feminine tree, as well as a tree of goddesses, it also represents maternal love in the temporal realm.
