Description

Organic Hazelnut Oil

Organic Hazelnut Oil is a cold pressed, nutrient-rich carrier oil that is ideal for a number of applications. It is obtained from the Corylus avellana tree, and is often referred to as C. avellana or C. avellana oil, in scientific texts.

Rich in antioxidant polyphenols, such as vitamin E and ferulic acid, with a good range of moisturising essential fatty acids, (EFAs), alongside anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and astringent properties, Organic Hazelnut Oil can provide skincare benefits to people of all ages and skin types. It is particularly helpful for those with oily and problem skin.

However, Organic Hazelnut Oil has been added to the Wild As The Wind carrier oil range as it is likely the best carrier oil for diluting essential oils for use by those suffering from varicose veins and haemorrhoids.

According to the data reported in ethnobotanical studies, C. avellana has been used for the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids, diabetes mellitus and gynaecological disorders (Sezik et al., 1997; Ramalhosai et al., 2011; Abeer and Amr, 2013).1

Organic Hazelnut Oil Health Benefits

Many of the health benefits of Organic Hazelnut Oil relate directly to the skin. However, Organic Hazelnut Oil can be found in preparations that have been formulated to treat varicose veins and haemorrhoids, as it is anti-inflammatory and may act as a vasoconstrictor.

The health benefits of Organic Hazelnut Oil are thought to include: anti-ageing + anti-inflammatory + antimicrobial + antioxidant + astringent + moisturizing + vasoconstrictor

Organic Hazelnut Oil For Skincare

Organic Hazelnut Oil is considered an anti-ageing oil, that is also beneficial for those with problem skin. It helps skin maintain elasticity and firmness thanks to its astringent constituents, notably catechins and tannins, which are two of several flavonoids found in Organic Hazelnut Oil.

As an astringent, Organic Hazelnut Oil is also particularly beneficial for oily and combination skin.

Nevertheless, the ability of Organic Hazelnut Oil to firm and slow the progress of ageing, makes it a useful oil for all ages and skin types,

Currently, there is a great interest in cosmetics prepared on natural resources bases and this may restrict the use of synthetic substances. Plants play a relevant role as a source of biologically active natural products with cosmetic and dermatological importance. According to this context, polyphenolic extracts are highlighted because they have proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, antimicrobial, and supporting activity in solar *photoprotection.2

*Photoprotection = sun protection

The photoprotection benefits of antioxidant oils is increasingly being discussed in scientific circles. Please refer to Carrier Oils For UV Protection for more information.

As well as potentially having mild sun protective benefits, the antioxidant properties in Organic Hazelnut Oil, particularly vitamin E, ferulic acid, gallic acid and caffeic acid, help to reduce free radical damage, (aka oxidative stress), from environmental pollution, poor diets, and excessive sun exposure, etc.

*Free radicals damage collagen, the connective tissue within the skin, and elastin, the protein responsible for the flexibility of our skin, causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear.

Containing ferulic acid, Organic Hazelnut Oil also protects us in the sun in another way…

Ferulic acid prevents the appearance of new blood vessels under the skin. Your skin will have fewer visible veins and less redness. Fading and preventing dark spots. Ferulic acid protects skin from the discoloration that comes from sun exposure or a genetic tendency for dark spots.3

It is now understood that sun damage is an oxidative process. Please see Natural Ways Of Avoiding Sunburn for more information.

The specific phenolics present in abundance in hazelnut oil are protocatechuic acid, catechin, caffeic acid, ferulic acid naringenin, and luteolin. The presence of these phenolics is also the reason for the high antioxidant capacity of the oil.4

Organic Hazelnut Oil May Prevent Skin Issues

As well as being anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and astringent, Organic Hazelnut Oil is a rich source of vitamin E, all of which help to reduce the incidence of inflammatory and bacterial skin conditions, such as; acne, eczema and atopic dermatitis etc.

Organic Hazelnut Oil Is Suitable For Problem Skin

Not only is Organic Hazelnut Oil nutritive, moisturising and antioxidant, it also has a 0 comedogenic rating. This means that it will not clog pores.

Clogged pores are one of the major causes of breakouts.

All problem skin conditions are inflammatory. As Organic Hazelnut Oil is an anti-inflammatory oil, with a 0 comedogenic rating, this makes it ideal for problem skin conditions.

Essential Oils For Varicose Veins & Haemorrhoids

Please note, the incidence of varicose veins and haemorrhoids are indicative or an underlying health issue, such as gastric infection, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet. Increasing exercise and eating a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet will also be beneficial.

If you wish to use your Organic Hazelnut Oil for varicose veins and/or haemorrhoids, it is best used as a carrier oil for diluting the following essential oils:

If you only wish to treat varicose veins on their own, then consider using Organic Hazelnut Oil with Peppermint Essential Oil. It will make for a invigorating blend, but should not be used in intimate areas.

Another beneficial aromatherapy oil, specifically for targeting varicose veins, is Ginger Essential Oil.

Ginger Essential Oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce swelling and inflammation from varicose veins. It also helps thin the blood, improving circulation and reducing blood pooling. It is also thought to assist in dissolving fibrin within blood vessels.

Fibrin can lead to venal congestion, and can cause blood clots.

Wild As The Wind supply organic versions of all of the essential oils listed above. In some instances, wildcrafted organic aromatherapy oils are available. To find these oils, simply search for the aromatherapy oil you are curious about, (using the search box at the top of the page)… Type the name of the oi you are interested in, such as ‘Cypress’ or ‘Yarrow,’ and then click the return key… Various options will be shown in the results if they exist.

Essential Fatty Acid Profile Of Organic Hazelnut Oil

Oleic Acid (Omega-9) 68% – 85% Linoleic Acid (Omega-6) 9% – 20% Palmitic Acid (Omega-7) 4% – 9% Palmitoleic Acid (Omega-7) Max 0.6% Stearic Acid (Saturated fat as found in Tallow) 1% – 4%

Oleic acid is moisturising, improves barrier function, and assists other constituents and ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin. This is because sebum, produced by our sebaceous glands, to counteract dryness, contains oleic acid. This parity of composition is what allows oleic acid to penetrate deeply and help regulate skin health.

Linoleic acid is hydrating and anti-inflammatory, when applied dermally. This is not true, if consumed internally. Please see Healthy Fats & Oils for more information.

Palmitic and stearic acids improve oil viscosity, and are emollient, supporting the dermal barrier function, protecting against moisture loss.

Directions For Use

  • External use only.
  • Suitable for facial and bodily application.
  • Can be used as a carrier oil for diluting essential oils.

Organic Hazelnut Oil is an ideal choice for blending with other nutrient-rich carrier oils, such as Organic Rosehip Oil and Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil, both of which should be used at a 10% dilution in other carrier oils.

The same is true of Bakuchiol Oil, which can be diluted in Organic Hazelnut Oil at a 1% to 10% dilution.
